Marquette, Negaunee agencies investigate disappearances, deaths

MARQUETTE – Two bodies were recently discovered and identified in Marquette County. The incidents are not related, and were investigated by different agencies.

According to a press release from the Michigan State Police – Negaunee Post, in May, officers began investigating the disappearance of Amy Luella Janson, 25, of Marquette. Upon conducting a search, officers discovered a backpack belonging to Janson in Wetmore Pond near the shoreline. Divers and a K9 unit were used to search the area, but due to the depth of the silt on the pond bottom, coupled with a lack of visibility, divers called off the search.

At approximately 6:40 p.m. on Sept. 13, hikers reported seeing a body in Wetmore Pond, the release states. Upon arrival to the scene, officers recovered and transported the victim to Marquette General Hospital for an autopsy. Dental records were used to identify the victim as Janson. The incident remains under investigation by MSP, though foul play is not suspected.

In a separate incident, investigated by the Marquette Police Department, the body of a missing man, Shawn Michael Dollar, 34, of Marquette, was discovered on Sept. 14. According to a press release from the department, Dollar was last seen on Sept. 8 at approximately 10:20 p.m. in downtown Marquette. He was later reported missing on Sept. 13.

While conducting an investigation into Dollar’s disappearance, police discovered his body in a vacant building, located at 231 W. Washington Street, in Marquette, mid-afternoon on Sept. 14.

The department worked with the Michigan State Police Crime Lab to conduct an investigation at the scene. Investigation into the incident continues.
