Taking advantage of an at home game, the Emeralds beat Westwood 3-2 last Thursday and Gwinn by the same score Tuesday night. Both matches went five sets.

Thursday against Westwood, Manistique opened with a 29-27 victory in set one, dropped the next two, then forced a fifth set with a convincing 25-12 win in set four.

“The match was a back and forth battle for three sets, then we came out in the fourth and played up to our potential,” coach Amy Nixon said. “Having been in this position before, the girls knew they had to put the pressure on Westwood right away, which they did and never looked back.”

Up two sets to one against Gwinn Tuesday, the Emeralds dropped set four 25-18, forcing yet another five set match. In the end, the Emeralds hammered Gwinn 15-6 for the win.

“I’m so proud of the team for pulling together and finishing this match with the win,” Nixon said. “We were pretty evenly matched; we struggled at times, but also made some really great plays when we needed to, especially dominating the fifth set. The team was pumped, fans were on their feet, and we really enjoyed the energy in the gym.”

With the wins, the Emeralds are 5-1 early in the 2012 season. Manistique now hits the road with games against Norway, Ishpeming and Negaunee.
