Robert J. Mercier


Robert J. Mercier Robert J. Mercier Robert J. Mercier, 63, of 225 Schoolcraft Ave., Manistique, Mich., passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. During his final days, he was surrounded by his wife and children at his son’s residence in Andover, Minn.

He was born on April 21, 1949, in Manistique, and was the son of Marvin and Gladys (Millington) Mercier. After graduating from Manistique High School in 1967, Bob initially attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich., to pursue a goal of becoming a math teacher. However, his plans were put on hold when he enlisted in the US Army in September 1968, serving through April 1971, including 24 months in Vietnam.

While serving in Vietnam, Bob met his wife Lang, the love of his life. He also spent an entire year completing the necessary paperwork to bring Lang home from Vietnam with him. On Feb. 1, 1971, he married the former Lang Thi Vo in Manistique, Mich., and raised their four children here.

After serving in the US Army, Bob attended Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba, Mich., where he earned an associate of applied science degree and was nominated to “Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges” for scholastic achievement. After Bay de Noc Community College, he transferred to Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., to complete a degree in mortuary science. Bob graduated as valedictorian of his class on Feb. 13, 1975, with a perfect 4.0 average.

After changing his career plans from math teacher to funeral director, Bob dedicated himself to serving his community, comforting families at their most vulnerable times of need. His career as a funeral director spans 35 years at the Messier Broullire Funeral Homes in Manistique and Garden. Bob will be remembered for his unyielding compassion and personal support offered to the numerous families of those who have passed away in the Manistique area. He will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, and his entire community.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Lang T. Mercier of Manistique; daughter, Kim D. Mercier of Seattle, Wash.; son, Thomas J. Mercier of Manistique; son, Marvin T. Mercier of Andover; son, Paul W. Mercier of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Tommy, Rachele, Ryan, Nichole, Micayla, Tiffany, and Nicholas; and great-grandson, Kaden. He is also survived by his brother Thomas D. Mercier and nephew Robert E. Mercier, both of Manistique.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A veteran’s memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m.

Services celebrating Bob’s life will be held at 6 p.m., at the funeral home, with Celebrant Carole Cooper officiating.
