Emeralds held back

ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming Hematites improved to 2-0 with their 45-14 Mid-Peninsula Conference victory over the Manistique Emeralds last Friday night in Ishpeming.

Up 14-7 after one quarter of play, the Hematites, offense led by Eric Kostreva opened things up scoring 24 unanswered points in the second and third quarters to control a 38-7 advantage going into the final 12 minutes of play. Kostreva, who accounted for 130 of Ishpeming’s 324 yards rushing yards, scored twice on runs of one and five yards in the first half.

The Emeralds Zavier Gonzalez scored on a 33-yard run in the first quarter; Kenner Broullire crossed the goal line from five yards out in the fourth quarter. Manistique was held to 132 yards of offense in the loss.

Broullire led the team, rushing for 56 yards. Gonzalez had 40. Tyler Kangas went 6-14 for 40 yards and an interception. Zack Lindemuth caught four passes for 30 yards.

Manistique, 0-2, travels to Gwinn Friday. Gwinn, 0-2, dropped their opener 49-12 to Gladstone and came up short, dropping a 45-21 Mid-Peninsula Conference decision to Iron Mountain last week.
