Pioneer Tribune photos MANISTIQUE – Participation was low for the city of Manistique’s first Paul Bunyan Triathlon, but organizers were pleased with the outcome, despite a few unexpected hurdles.

Swimming, biking and running his way to a first place finish was Lee Kanitz of Hessel, Mich. Kanitz completed the 400-meter swim, 15 mile bike race and 5K run, crossing the finish line at the 1:13:06 mark.

The first and only individual in the women’s category was Cathy Harris of Manistique. She completed all three events with a time of 1:40:43.

In the team category, first place was taken by the co-ed team “Cavity Search”. Molly Campbell (swim), Marquette; Doug LaBar of Marquette (bike); and Pete Jacobs of Cooks (5K run) finished the event in 1:21:27.

Originally scheduled for July 21, the event’s organizing committee ran into one obstacle after another in their quest to bring the event together in time.

Meeting insurance requests for the swimming portion of the event and having to change the planned bicycle route at the last minute forced the event to be rescheduled for Aug. 25.

With a new route in place, (although not ideal for a fast paced competition) and swimming regulations met, the only challenge for the committee was to get the word out again. The mission was accomplished and, at the end of the day, all participants were pleased with result.

For the first Paul Bunyan Triathlon event, 11 individuals took to the challenge, as did three teams consisting of eight people for a total of 19 participants. Twenty-one had originally registered.

Organizers will be selecting a date for the 2013 event soon, for plent of advance notice.
