John P. Ris

John P. Ris, 79, of Cooks, Mich., died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at

Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in

Manistique, Mich.

He was born July 3, 1933, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Martinus and

Anna (Zybrands) Ris and graduated from high school there.

During the Korean

War, he served in the

U.S. Navy.

John was employed as a tool and die maker and later in management for General Motors in Detroit.

He and his wife of 43 years, the former Darlene J. Parrish, lived most of their lives in the Detroit area and moved to the Cooks area 13 years ago.

John loved all sports. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, bowling, downhill and cross country skiing, and coin collecting. He was a member of the Honda Gold Wings Association.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene J. Ris of Cooks; sons, Bill Ris, John Ris, Jr. both of Clarkston, Mich., Wesley Schwamb of East Detroit, Mich., Tony Schwamb of Warren, Mich., and Bobby Schwamb of Waterford, Mich.; daughters, Karen Waterbury of Waterford, Cindy Schwamb Weber of Manistique, Jackie Schwamb of Pennsylvania and Colleen Schwamb of Waterford; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Bernie Ris of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Marty Ris of Cincinnati, Ohio.

A memorial gathering will be held from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, July 22, at the Thompson Township Hall in Thompson, Mich. A veteran’s memorial ritual will be recited at 1 p.m. with a visitation to follow. A luncheon will follow the visitation.
