Blaze destroys 1 vehicle, causes damage to garage

MANISTIQUE – A vehicle was destroyed and a garage received water, smoke, and fire damage Sunday in Manistique. According to law enforcement officials, the fire was reported at approximately 7:45 p.m. on State Road.

The fire, at the residence of Henry and Anne Richey, was likely contained due to the homeowners’ decision to keep the garage door closed, explained Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Officer Bob Madden.

The Hiawatha Township Fire Department was assisted by Manistique, Thompson, and Inwood Township Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as Manistique Public Safety, the Michigan State Police, and the Red Cross.

Kouw guilty of 4 charges, acquitted of 2 others

MANISTIQUE – After a district court jury trial lasting approximately 12 hours, a Manistique man was found guilty of four of six charges last week. Larry Alan Kouw, of 596 County Road 440, faced the charges following an incident which occurred on May 1.

Kouw was found guilty of: one count of assault and battery; one count of malicious destruction of property over $200, but less than $1,000; and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was acquitted of two other charges.

Kouw will be sentenced on June 27 at 11:30 a.m.

Police investigate June 15 break-in, announce award

MANISTIQUE – Michigan State Police from the Manistique Detachment continue to investigate a breaking and entering incident that occurred in Hiawatha Township on June 15.

The incident occurred on Riverview Drive at approximately 3 a.m. The suspect(s) took a large amount of cash, along with the homeowner’s ATM/debit card and other personal information. The card was later used at ATM’s at Manistique Federal Credit Union and Wells Fargo at approximately 3:30 a.m.

The victims family has now set up a reward in the amount of $1,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s). If you have any information please contact the Michigan State Police in Manistique at (906) 643-7582.
