Paper Chase set to kick off Folkfest

MANISTIQUE – The annual Manistique Paper Chase will once again be a major part of Schoolcraft County’s Folkfest celebration.

This year’s 24th annual Folkfest takes place on Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14. As always, the race will serve as the kick-off of Saturday morning’s festival activities.

The Paper Chase is a 5K and 10K race for walkers and runners. Increasing in popularity each year, the event broke participation records in each of its last three installments, drawing a field of 175 athletes in 2009, 180 in 2010 and 213 finishes in 2011.

The race will begin at 9 a.m., near the Pearl Street entrance to the mBank parking lot. The routes go through town, under the U.S. 2 bridge and past the marina. The 10K race continues east to the turn-around point at Glenwood Drive. Both races include a final leg on the lakefront boardwalk before concluding at the marina.

Chip timing will be provided this year by Superior Timing.

Runner and walker registration and packet pick-up will be available on July 13,from 7-8 p.m. at the Senior Citizen’s Center on Main Street and again beginning at 7:30 a.m. on July 14.

No registrations will be accepted after 8:30 a.m. on the morning of the race.

For those who prefer to sign up early, a form can be found on the Upepr Peninsula Road Runners Club website at www.uprrc.org or picked up at the Schoolcraft County Chamber of Commerce.

The early registration fee is $12 per person, $10 for members of the U.P. Road Runners Club, and $8 for those 14 and under.

After 5 p.m. on July 7, the fee will be $15 for everyone.
