‘Yooper’ rides a success

MUNISING – Pictured Rocks Cruises of Munising took 921 “Yoopers”, representing 14 of the 15 counties in the U.P., for a free ride Saturday. Four special trips were offered to area residents who presented any U.P. residential identification.

John Madigan, manager of the cruises, reported the weather was excellent and many riders spent the day exploring other scenic sites in the area.

“This is a wonderful thing that Pictured Rocks Cruises has done,” said Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Superintendent Jim Northup. “By offering a ‘Yoopers Ride Free Day’, Pictured Rocks Cruises provided nearly 1,000 people the opportunity to experience the beauty of the National Lakeshore.

I spoke with several people who told me they had dreamed about doing this for years, and who were just thrilled with their trip,” he continued. “By coming, those folks also spent time in other local businesses and learned more about what our wonderful area has to offer. I think many of them will be back with friends in tow.”
