U.P. Book Tour coming to Manistique

Authors to visit, present to residents

MANISTIQUE – Manistique School and Public Library invites the public to attend a U.P. Book Tour event on June 25. The event will take place from 1-3 p.m. at the library. The U.P. Book Tour 2012 consists of author visits to 20 sites across the Upper Peninsula between June 19 and July 7. Over 40 U.P. or Michigan-based authors will participate in literary and theater events to celebrate literature.

Featured writers include Jane Piirto, Chad Faries, Mary McMyne, Janeen Rastall, Zoe Zolbrod, with author Janice Repka serving as event moderator. A book sale and signing opportunity will follow the presentation/ panel discussion.

Book tour project director Ron Riekki is an author, poet and playwright. Northern Michigan University Press will release two titles in June, “Dandelion Cottage-A Play”, adapted by Riekki, and an anthology of plays called “Your Map is Wrong-A Collection of Plays” set in the U.P. The book tour is the subject of an upcoming documentary film under Riekki’s direction.

The 2012 U.P. Book Tour is partnering with libraries, book stores, colleges, community centers and other organizations to provide the events. There is no admission charge, due, in part, to a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Listings of book tour events and authors can be found online at www.upbooktour.org or by calling (906) 226-4318. Information can also be obtained by calling the Manistique School and Public Library at (906) 341- 4316.

The library will also be kicking off their 2012 Summer Reading Program on June 13. The program will run Wednesdays from 1-2 p.m.

Books, crafts, games, snacks and prizes will be offered to children ages 3 and up, each Wednesday until July 18. The program will not be offered on July 4.
