Girl Scouts invite girls to day camp

MANISTIQUE – A 40-yearold tradition continues as the Manistique Area Girl Scouts celebrate Summer Fun Days this month. Girls ages 5-18 are invited to join in the fun as they experience “No Girl Left Inside” June 18-22, at Indian Lake State Park.

Camp will be held Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with an overnight stay for girls in Units 5 and 6 on Thursday night. Friday’s camp session will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at noon with a closing ceremony. Parents are welcome to attend.

According to Jill Johnson, community development manager for the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, this year’s camp session will be an exciting change during the 100th Anniversary year of Girl Scouts of the USA.

“GSUSA has designated 2012 as ‘The Year of the Girl’ and we are thrilled to offer girls the opportunity to spend some time to learn outdoor skills in the traditional Girl Scout fashion,” she said. “Our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, was very passionate about getting girls into the outdoors and we continue that passion in her honor.”

Girls will experience fire building, outdoor cooking, knife and water safety and much more. Older girls will participate in a “triatha fun” with hiking, biking and kayaking around the area.

Registration will be held on June 11, at the First Baptist Church (across from the courthouse) from 6-8:30 p.m. The camp program is offered to all girls, regardless of their connection with a troop. The annual national membership fee is $12. Cost for the week-long program is $35 and will include a commemorative t-shirt. For more information, or to register girls for the program, contact Johnson at (888) 747-6945 ext. 6021 or jjohnson@gsnwgl.org.
