Boater’s safety class to be offered

MANISTIQUE – The Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department will be holding a Boater’s Safety Education Course on Thursday, May 31, from 4–9 p.m. at the Schoolcraft County Courthouse in Conference Room 2. The following rules apply to boaters:

• Persons born after December 31, 1978, shall not operate a personal watercraft unless they obtain a boating safety certificate.

• Operators age 12-15 may operate a boat powered by more than six horsepower only if they have passed a boating safety course and have on board their boating safety certificate or are accompanied by a person at least 16 years of age.

The sheriff’s department recommends anyone who operates a vessel or spends time on the water take a boating safety course. The course is free of charge and all materials will be provided. Boater’s Safety Education Certificates will be issued upon successful completion of the class. For more information, contact Deputies Maddox or Jackson at 341-2122.
