Girls picking up the pace

The Manistique Emerald girl’s track and field team finished third and fourth in their last two outings, with a lot of the girls performing their personal bests going into regionals.

On Monday in Newberry, the girl’s racked-up 55.5 points, but were edged out by Brimley who won the meet with 120 points. Sault Ste. Marie came in second with 61, Manistique 55.5, Engadine 55, Cheboygan 51, Pickford 50, Rudyard 50, Munising Baptist 26, Newberry 22, Cedarville 17, Munising 14 and Maplewood Baptist 3.5

Elisa MacGregor, Kyra Lauzon, Shelby Carlson and Hannah Bryant captured the Emeralds a first place finish in the 400-meter relay with their time of 54.64 seconds. The foursome also finished second in the 800-meter relay with their time of 1:55.60.

Taylor Lockwood took the only individual first place finish with her vault of 7-6.

Second place finishes: Monica Giles, shot put, 33; MacGregor, pole vault, 7

Third place finish: Darby Demers, 1,600-meter run, 5:58

Fourth place finish: Giles, discus, 91-8

Sixth place finishes: Lauzon, 200-meter dash, 28.74; Brittany Zellar, pole vault, 6-6

The Emeralds finished in fourth place Saturday, May 12, in Negaunee. Team host, the Miners, won the meet with a score of 149.5. Marquette took second with 139, followed by Escanaba 99, Manistique 62.5, Ishpeming 59, Westwood 10 and Munising 7.

Taylor Lockwood cleared the bar at 9-feet to take the top spot in the pole vault.
