C.U.P. ready for ball

MANISTIQUE – C.U.P. Baseball will open its seventh season at the Denton Nelson Field on Fifth Street, Saturday, May 19.

Activities will start at 9 a.m. with a T-ball game between Linda’s Bread Box and Main Street Pizza. At 10 a.m., Night Life Karaoke will play Dairy Kream; 11 a.m. will be mBank playing Design on a Tee, followed by Peterson Brothers Fisheries playing Goudreau Trucking at noon.

Official opening ceremonies will begin with the colors being presented by Vietnam veteran, David Gould. Cindy Silkworth will sing the National Anthem, with a parade of sponsors and donors to follow.

Special donors include the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the city of Manistique. T-ball sponsors include: Dairy Kream, Design on a Tee, Goudreau Trucking, Linda’s Bread Box, Main Street Pizza, mBank, Night Life Karaoke and Peterson Brothers Fisheries. Minor league sponsors are: Garden, Graymont Western Lime, Inc. and Online Engineering, Inc. Sponsoring the major league is: Bowman Gas and Oil, Garden, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital and U.P. Tire.

There will also be a burning of “the note” ceremony. When C.U.P. Baseball was formed in 2006, the league had to borrow $10,000 from mBank to purchase new equipment, uniforms, balls and pay for insurance. In the fall of 2011, “the note” was finally paid off. Participating in the burning ceremony will be Randy Knuth and John Miller, original signers of the loan. After the ceremony, Knuth will be recognized for his contributions to C.U.P. Baseball.

Knuth and Miller will also be throwing out the first pitch. Baseball will then resume with a minor league battle between Graymont Western Lime and Online Engineering, followed by Garden playing Online Engineering. The night cap games will be between major league foes, U.P. Tire and Bowman Gas and Oil followed by Garden playing SMH.
