Blaze damages structure
MANISTIQUE – An upstairs apartment received heavy fire damage Friday, according to a press release from Manistique Public Safety. No injuries were reported, but a vacant, second downstairs apartment also received heavy water and smoke damage.
The fire was discovered at 11:48 p.m. by Manistique Public Safety Sgt. Charles Willour and Officer Vern Faulds, while the two were patrolling, stated the release. The officers notified both the Manistique Public Safety and Volunteer Fire Departments of the fire, located at 537 Michigan Ave.
According to the release, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the upstairs apartment, whose tenants are George Lavance and Leslle Lash. Neither was home at the time of the fire. The home is owned by downstate resident Jeremy Mortensen.
Assisting on the scene were the Michigan State Police, and the Schoolcraft County chapter of the American Red Cross. The fire remains under investigation.
