Expo to kick off Friday

Gun and knife show returns for weekend

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Recreation Department is preparing for its annual outdoor recreation expo this weekend.

The 2012 Outdoor Expo and Gun and Knife Show will be held at Little Bear West Arena on Maple Street in Manistique. The event runs Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to Recreation Director Bill Pullman, the event boasted approximately 1,000 attendees in 2011, and he is hoping to reach that number again this year.

“We have a couple of new vendors this year, including the Fish and Hunt Shop from Curtis and Downwind Sports of Marquette,” said Pullman.

A concession will be run by the Manistique Hockey Association on Friday and Saturday, and the Recreation Department will take it over on Sunday.

This year’s expo will feature numerous gun and knife dealers, along with a variety of businesses showcasing outdoor items ranging from hunting, trapping, fishing and camping gear to recreational vehicles, boats, snowmobiles and ORVs, chain saws, wood-stoves, homebuilding options – even wines and clothing and accessories.

Among the vendors and organizations expected to have displays at the expo are: Lund’s Sales and Service, Curran Chevrolet-Buick, Chuck Renze Ford, Watson’s Marine, Pinar Wood Products, Barker Construction and Wausau Homes, Nye Construction, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, SORVA, Emma Claire Boutique, T’s Taste of Chicago, the Manistique Farmers’ Market, and the Mackinaw Trail Winery.

Admission to the expo is $1, with proceeds going to support Central Park improvements and recreation programs.

The show is sponsored by the Pioneer Tribune, Advisor, WLUC TV, and the Radio Results Network.
