Emerald boys take first in Iron Mountain..... girls capture second

Taking first place in the first event of the day set the tone for a dominating win for the Manistique Emerald boys’ track and field team in Iron Mountain Tuesday.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Bryson Lawrence, John Rahn, Tyler Pomeroy and Ryan Ramey crossed the finish line 23 seconds ahead of the field, and from there the Emeralds racked up 101.5 points to win the meet.

The host Mountaineers came in second with 79 points, followed by West Iron County 37 and Munising 35.5.

“I was very happy with the boys’ performance today,” coach Mary Lou Lund said. “This was a nice warm up for Saturday, when we host the Kiwanis meet. I hope the day brings great things for our team.”

The Emerald girls had an equally solid outing, capturing second place behind seven first-place finishes.

West Iron County won the meet with 118 points. Manistique 61, Iron Mountain 44.5 and Munising 33.5.

Coach Chris Marana said he was very pleased with the girls’ performances.

“We really competed hard and did a lot of good things that we can build off of,” Marana said. “We went there with just 14 girls, and 11 different girls placed in individual events, plus we won both sprint relays. That is a pretty good day.”
