Geraldine “Geri” McKenzie, 68, of Yuma, Colo., passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Pathways Hospice in Loveland, Colo.
Geri was born on Sept. 26, 1943, in Ishpeming, Mich., to Eino and Estella (Oja) Jarvi. She graduated from Champion High School in Champion, Mich., and went on to attend Marquette University in Marquette, Mich., where she graduated as a licensed practical nurse. She practiced nursing at Marquette General Hospital where she met her husband of almost 46 years, Tom. They were married on May 22, 1965, in Marquette.
Geri enjoyed reading, gardening, crafts and puzzles, going on walks, listening to classical music and sitting on the front porch with her morning cup of tea. She loved spending time with her family and was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful singer and spent a lot of time in earlier years involved in community and church activities. Geri was passionate about animals, and for many years rescued and cared for abandoned or neglected cats.
Geri is survived by her husband, Tom; son, Michael (Anna) McKenzie of Fort Collins, Colo.; daughter, Peggy (Lance) Klanecky of Grand Island, New England; mother, Estella Jarvi of Champion; mother-in-law, Fronia McKenzie of Manistique, Mich.; and sisters, Maria (Carl) Laaninen of Champion, Joan Grimm of Campbell River, Canada, Julie (Jon) Mattila of Republic, Mich., Jackie (David) Helwig of Crystal Falls, Mich.; brothers, Michael (Donna) Jarvi of Lake Bluff, Ill., and Jonathan (Robin) Jarvi of Republic; sister-in-law Darlene (Gary) Gill of Marquette; grandchildren, Brittany, Darian, Eric and Stephen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Geri was preceded in death by her father, Eino Jarvi; and her son, Thomas Lloyd McKenzie, Jr.
A memorial will be held in Geri’s honor at a date to be determined in Grand Island.
