Fish Report

Well, another taste of winter type cold weather and snow flurries in the air. Of course it is only the middle of April so it sure is not unheard of up here in the U.P. But needless to say, most Yoopers are ready for a real taste of spring that stays around. I guess it is just a curse when you start putting your winter stuff away thinking winter is over and spring is here.

There is one sure sign of spring when yard sale signs start showing up on the corners. Of course it really helps when they say, “Yard sale today in “heated” garage. But then again you may see this all year around up here if the wind is right off the lake.

Speaking of this date in April the opening of trout season is upon us. Once again fishermen will not need their winter gear and four-wheel drive to get through the snow. I have seen years when there was so much snow this time of year there was no way you were going to drive back into some trout streams.

This goes for trapping too. This year the trappers could drive almost anywhere to set their traps and there was not even the normal mud hole which you had to get through. It also seems that trappers are continuing to get better prices for their furs this year. Really they had better be getting better prices because the overhead with gas prices has gone way up.

Once in a while I get a report where a youngster is out trapping with dad and grandpa and this sure is good news. It does not hurt when the youth gets some good prices for the furs he caught out there with dad either. The only way we will save the enjoyment of being able to continue to trap, hunt, and fish like we always have is for the next generation to be brought up enjoying it too.

Spring turkey season is almost here for those that like to take advantage of it.

If you are going out in the woods please remember we have yet to receive a good wet, soaking rain so it is still real dry out in the woods. Of course if I write about it in my article maybe (as happens a lot of times) we will get the good soaking rain between the time I do my article and when the paper comers out. Either way we sure could use a good rain.

The bear quota was set for this year and it is as follows.

As for bear quotas, the NRC authorized the DNR to sell 6,976 licenses for the Upper Peninsula, a decrease of 3,381 from 2011, and 1,015 licenses for the northern Lower Peninsula, a decrease of 370 from last year. New survey data indicate the state’s bear populations are in decline and the quotas approved by the NRC should stabilize the populations in upcoming years.

I found the following quote from DNR bear specialist Adam Bump.

“We’re pleased that we had the survey data in time to allow the NRC to make an informed decision,” said DNR bear specialist Adam Bump. Although data will be analyzed following the bear season, it’s anticipated that license quotas will be reduced in 2013 in the northern Lower Peninsula as well, Bump said.” We believe we can stabilize the bear population in the Upper Peninsula in two years, but it will take four years in the northern Lower Peninsula,” Bump explained.

Bear and elk applications go on sale May 1 through June 1. Applications cost $4 and are available at all license dealers or online at www.mdnr-elicense.com. Results will be posted online on June 25.

I tried to find the breakdown by areas to see just how it affects the area you may hunt but could not find it on the DNR website. It does not mean it wasn’t there I just could not find it with my lack of skills on a computer.
