Wow! Can you imagine reaching 100 years old? Congratulations to Olga Anderson, as many don’t get the chance. Unfortunately, due to my sister becoming ill, I was unable to attend Olga’s birthday party, but I did hear they had close to 90 in attendance. Happy birthday to you!
Welcome back to one of our very active volunteers! We missed you Mary Burns and I’m glad to see your daughter safely delivered you back to Manistique. Thanks, Ann for sharing your mom!
For those who love to play bingo, here is your chance! The Eva Burrell Animal Shelter volunteers will be holding a one-day bingo on Sunday, April 29, at 2 p.m. which will be held at the Senior Center. Doors will open at 1 p.m.
The fun part about their fundraiser is the payout will be prizes worth at least $20 in gift certificates, along with a few 50/50 bingo games. I have been told they have some really nice certificates. (Examples: Big Boy, Three Seasons, etc.) They will also be having free beverages and snacks. Why not join them and don’t forget to bring your dabbers and bingo chips! It will make a fun Sunday afternoon.
If you don’t have the time to volunteer at the shelter, this would definitely be a way to support them.
We are asking you to spread the word for us. The Manistique Farmers’ Market is scheduled to open early this year. They plan on being open by May 23. Hopefully we will have our Project Fresh coupons by then to share with you.
We have invited Kerry Ott as a guest speaker at the Center to talk a little about the market. She will be at the Center on Thursday, April 12, at 11:30 a.m. Why not join us. By calling 341-5085 you can sign up for the Noon Meal following her presentation.
Our pancake supper is fast approaching. If you haven’t paid yet, please do so, giving us an idea on how many groceries to purchase. The cost is a $5 donation, which will include pancakes, bacon, potatoes and possibly Dan Barber’s homemade gooey buns.
Entertainment by the Mud Hole Band will begin at 4 p.m. Hope to see you there!
Wednesday, April 25, North Woods Home Nursing will be at the Center providing a Foot Care Clinic (toe nail clipping) by appointment only. Call the Center at 341-5923 for an appointment.
Have you ever heard of “Humming Bird Cake”? I felt it was so good, I would like to share the recipe with you. This came from our famous bakers, Vi Sundling and Rose Merryman. I encourage you to try it. Here goes:
Humming Bird Cake
Mix the following dry ingredients together:
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
Then add and stir by hand (Do Not Use Mixer) the following ingredients:
1 1/2 cup canola oil
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
2 cups mashed banana’s
3 eggs slightly beaten
1 8 oz. can crushed pineapple (Undrained)
Bake at 350 for 1 hour or 1 hour and 15 minutes. (Check after 1 hour.) If you want to make in smaller pans, check time sooner. This makes the most awesome moist cake!
