News from MAS
Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Hoholik are proud to announce the winner of the 2012 Iditarod!!! Kayla Hoholik came in first place this year!! Well maybe not Kayla herself, but her musher, Dallas Seavey, won the real race!! The children have had so much fun following their musher and learning all about the Iditarod. We also had an exciting week here in third grade when our praying mantises hatched!! They are the tiniest little critters. The kids loved seeing this hands-on experience of the life cycle!!
Our classes were thrilled to taste the healthy snacks from Fuel Up Play 60!! This is a great program that Mr. Marana and the Health Advisory Team have put in place for our kids. After tasting the fruit smoothie, the chips and hummus, they then voted on how they liked it. Third grade loved the snack!!!
Mr. Marana reports that the food sampling was not only a success in the Third Grade, but also with grades two, four, and five! The Emerald Elementary Wellness Team served red pepper humus with pita chips and fruit blended smoothies. The smoothies won out (89 percent), followed by pita chips (75 percent) and humus (60 percent).
Mr. Randy Middledorf, a nurse at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital and member of the Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Committee, spoke to Mrs. Nixon’s health classes recently. Students were very interested and engaged in his presentation on abuse and prevention.
Mr. Morrison was recently elected to a three year term as a director at large to the Michigan Science Teacher Association Board of Directors. The MSTA is a highly diverse group of educators interested in improving science education in the State of Michigan. The vision statement of the MSTA is as follows: MSTA is the foremost leadership and advocacy group for science education in Michigan.
